ABOUT THE WORK

“When the truth has been incinerated and reconciliation seems impossible,

there is Reckoning.”

Directed, designed and produced by ARTICLE 11 founding artists Tara Beagan (Ntlaka’pamux and Irish “Canadian”) and Andy Moro (Omushkego Cree / Mixed Euro), Reckoning is an ode to the irreconcilable. Originally conceived as a theatrical triptych in sound, movement and video, Reckoning is an incendiary presentation of three separate experiences with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

On Tuesday, December 15, 2015, the final report of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was released. The TRC was a government-led inquiry into the impact of the Indian Residential School system and the possibilities for restitution in its wake.

The TRC has issued ninety-four calls to action as a way of advising every Canadian on how they can contribute to restitution and harmony. This production, which debuted on stage in April of 2016, is an act of continuing that work. This film is intended as a permanent offering for all who have come before us, and all who will come after.
